从功能对等视角看《红楼梦》两译本中言外功能的翻译

内容摘要

《红楼梦》被誉为中国语言与文化的百科全书。随着它被翻译介绍到其它国家,对《红楼梦》翻译的研究也越来越受关注。研究的角度多种多样,例如美学、文化、修辞、风格等等,但从语言的言外功能角度出发对它的研究却很少。语言的言外功能往往反映了作者或说话人的真实意图,因此在翻译中再现原文的言外功能可以帮助译文读者更好的理解作品,具有重要的意义。本文旨在从这一研究空白入手,以杨宪益和霍克斯的两个全英译本为例,探讨《红楼梦》语言的言外功能的翻译。尤金·奈达教授提出的功能对等理论是本文的理论基础。本文介绍了研究的背景、研究意义及论文的整体结构安排,回顾了过去相关的研究及理论,主要包括言外功能和功能对等理论。奈达教授提出的功能对等理论十分重视译文读者的反应,倡导译文与原文取得最为自然贴切的对等,而非文本的形式对等。论文从五个层面(字形层面、语音层面、词汇层面、句法层面和风格层面)探讨了言外语言在英汉中的异同及其翻译,并介绍了言语行为。言语行为包括五种：宣告、阐述、表达、指令及承诺。根据语言功能与语言形式是否一致,又可分为直接言语行为和间接言语行为。论文主体部分以功能对等理论为依据,通过对《红楼梦》两个译本中大量的实例分析,对比研究了两译本中言外功能的翻译,主要包括五个层面的言外语言使用及言外行为的翻译。最后,作者总结了全文的主要观点,指出了研究的不足之处并为进一步研究提出了建议。总的来说,杨宪益比较忠于原文,这种忠实常常以牺牲语言的言外功能为代价,且有时会导致译文读者理解上的困难。霍克斯则更注重译文读者的反应,翻译比较灵活,尽力再现原文语言的言外功能及美感。因此,在言外功能的翻译上,霍克斯更胜一筹,取得了与原文较高程度的功能对等。
