内容摘要

一个民族生存和发展的潜力不仅取决于政治、经济和军事力量，也深深地受到文化活力的制约。文化活力是反映一国综合实力和竞争力的重要因素。汉语典籍英译是源远流长的华夏文明和中国传统文化保持活力的主要途径之一，能够增强汉语言文化在世界舞台上的竞争力。目前，典籍英译得到了翻译工作者的高度重视和政府的大力支持，大规模的典籍英译工作正在有组织地进行，学术领域中系统的理论研究和实践探索也在有序地向前推进。典籍英译的前途是光明的，其理论和实践工作者的任务是十分艰巨的。伦理学是揭示行为规范的哲学，哲学对实践活动都有一定的指导作用。翻译的伦理学研究的是翻译活动中各个行为主体之间的伦理关系和译者的伦理，是指导汉语典籍英译并影响翻译质量的重要因素。译者的翻译伦理观是各种客观因素和主观因素共同作用的结果,对译者伦理素养要求的提高能够不断改进翻译过程，提高翻译质量。《菜根谭》是明清言集的绝对代表作，集释、道、儒三家思想之大成，汇集了中国传统文化中教人修身处世的语录，成为受到国内外翻译工作者注目的汉语典籍，因此《菜根谭》的英译对中国文化的传播具有深远的意义。一直以来，《菜根谭》的英译本都不乏理论和实践批评，然而对其英译的伦理研究却很少见。本文尝试从理论和实践相结合的角度分析《菜根谭》英译的伦理性，在韦努蒂的异化伦理和切斯特曼翻译伦理模式的规范下分析保罗.怀特和蒋坚松的英译本，找出他们各自如何处理翻译过程中源语言和目的语之间的文化冲突的翻译对策，以及他们在何种程度上遵循和违背了翻译伦理的框架，并在对其中一些例句进行对比分析的基础上得出典籍英译最好由中国人来做的结论。本文旨在通过对新时期典籍英译的伦理学关注来更好地认识翻译实践活动，保持中国文化的活力，以便更好地让中国文化走出去。
