英语学习词典中的政治正确

内容摘要

受20世界下半页美国民权运动,妇女运动和黑人运动的影响,美国的自由派认识和激进分子提出了“政治正确”原则,力图为长久以来受压迫和不公正待遇的妇女和少数派人士声张正义。由这一原则引发的政治正确运动先后在60年代和90年代得到了前所未有的重视。进入21世纪之后,这股推行“政治正确”的运动之风不仅没有减弱反而有加强的趋势。受“政治正确”运动影响,人们极力推行使用政治正确的语言。用“他”泛指男女的用法已被“他”或“她”所替代。词典编撰者开始收录政治正确的语言并对其做详尽的注释和说明。本文试着对“政治正确”做一综览,并在此基础上对英语学习词典中的“政治正确”的语言做深入研究,以期发现英语学习词典对“政治正确”的语言描述方面存在的问题并给出改进的建议。首先,本文对“政治正确”这一术语做了追本溯源的研究,揭示出“政治正确”在不同历史时代所具有的不同意义;接着,对三次“政治正确”运动进行总结概括,其次对“政治正确”做出相关的语言学研究,如:“政治正确”的语言与礼貌原则,“政治正确”的语言的社会功用,“政治正确”的语言与委婉语的相似性和不同以及对“政治正确”的评论。在此基础上,本文从释义,例证,语法信息,语用信息等方面对牛津高阶英语学习词典第四版,第五版和第六版中涉及“政治正确”语言和“政治不正确”的语言的相关信息进行历时对比研究,揭示出“政治正确”语言和“政治不正确”的语言在英语学习词典中的发展趋势和词典中对“政治正确”的语言和“政治不正确”描述方面存在的一些问题;本文的对比研究还涉及2003左右出版的5本英语学习词典,包括牛津第六版,朗文第四版,剑桥第二版,柯林斯第三版和麦克米伦第一版。通过对比研究找出当代英语学习词典在处理“政治正确”语言和“政治不正确”语言时存在的问题并提出改进的建议。
