从文化学派翻译观看林语堂英译作品的翻译策略

内容摘要

笔者拟从文化角度入手来研究林语堂英译作品中针对文化信息所采取的翻译策略,分析文化对其策略选择的影响及该选择对文化产生的影响。以霍姆斯、波波维奇、埃文-左哈尔特别是苏珊·巴斯奈特和安德鲁·勒弗费尔为代表的文化学派主张将文化纳入翻译研究的范畴、从文化角度来考察翻译活动及翻译本身。翻译研究在苏珊·巴斯奈特和安德鲁·勒弗费尔的倡导下进行了文化转向之后,翻译对文化的影响和重构作用日渐引起人们的关注。林语堂一生译著丰富,其多姿多彩的译品及蕴含其中的人生哲理给世界带来了新鲜血液。凭借其译著,林语堂向西方介绍了一个他所认识的中国,描述了一个他眼中的中国文化,传达了他从中国文化中汲取到并身体力行的人生哲理。从某种程度上来看,林语堂的翻译为西方读者构建了一个“第三文化”。林语堂一生致力于东西方文化介绍与交流,其作品在西方广受欢迎与他所选择的文本和采取的翻译策略不无关系。本文从林语堂的研究价值谈起,探讨了林语堂在中国文化和西方文化之间的选择。受中国文化和西方文化的双重熏陶,林语堂对两种文化十分熟悉。尽管如此,林语堂对中国文化还是表现出了极大的偏爱,这一点正文部分会有详细说明。对中国文化的偏爱和对西方文化的了解直接影响了林语堂对翻译文本及翻译策略的选择。而这一点正与文化学派所倡导的从文化角度来研究翻译不谋而合。因此,笔者选择了文化学派几个代表人物,对他们的观点做了简单介绍,并以此为理论根据,分析林语堂英译作品中的翻译策略,从而说明译者及其译本对文化的影响与构建作用
