单模态和多模态英语传记的比较研究

在当今这个信息时代里,名人出书现象屡见不鲜。这种现象促进了传记文学的发展。然而对于传记的语言学研究却相当滞后。因此对传记进行相关语言学研究是必要的。20世纪90年代兴起的多模态语篇分析研究多集中在内容层面和表达层面上,至今还没有相关的语类研究。本文利用哈桑和马丁语类理论的整合理论框架对四本单模态和四本多模态英语传记在两个层面上进行语类视角下的比较研究,旨在找出二者的语类关系及语类结构上的异同。此外,本文还将通过对多模态英语传记中视觉图像的统计分析找出图像视角下单模态和多模态英语传记的宏观差异。语类视角下的研究分两个层面进行。第一个层面用哈桑的语类结构潜式理论对单模态和多模态英语传记的成分进行研究。研究发现单模态和多模态英语传记属于‘英语传记’这一语类下的两个子语类。这即为二者的语类关系。第二个层面对单模态和多模态英语传记正文的纲要式结构在三个分层面上进行比较研究,找出二者在语类结构上的异同。二者之间主要差异存在于二者正文纲要式结构中子步骤的体现方式上。图像视角下的研究采用统计分析的方法。本文从类型、步骤、传记、语境化关系和语境化偏向这五个方面对四本多模态英语传记中所有视觉图像的分布情况进行了统计分析。其结果如下:图像分四种类型。图像在各类型、各步骤、各书中呈不均衡分布:在类型中的分布与图像的功能有关;在步骤中的分布与英语传记的功能及隐含在底层的价值观念有关;在传记中的分布与传主所从事的学科有关。图像在语境化关系与语境化偏向上的分布特点造成读者理解空间扩大,使得语篇语义活跃度提高,进而实现了多模态英语传记的语义扩张。在重新语境化或共同语境化关系下,图像与文字语篇在提供信息上相应地成互补或强化关系。宏观上来说,由图像引起的单模态和多模态英语传记之间的不同导致二者在信息量和阅读路径上不同。总之,在信息时代里,单模态和多模态英语传记的差别能够预测从前者到后者的发展趋势。
